Posted: August 19th, 2009 | Author: Cary | Filed under: pictures, prose | 1 Comment »so yes, i spent a gorgeous afternoon on angel island last saturday, mostly to see what kind of imagery i might pull from that rather dry piece of rock jutting out of the north bay {gawd, did that sound pretentious or what?}
anyway, i did get a behind-the-scenes tour of the old POW barracks, and really enjoyed photographing some of the artifacts from that time period during the 40s when angel island was nothing more than a lightly disguised prison.
there is an aching tension in those walls, even now, and i wished i were fluent in japanese — there are poems etched deep into the wood here… painted over again and again, but still thoroughly legible. i find that quite endearing. the souls are long since gone, but their words remain.
the photo below is my favorite from the shoot, though i hope to post more here as the day progresses.

Posted: August 7th, 2009 | Author: Cary | Filed under: pictures | 5 Comments »so as i mentioned recently, i’ve been shooting some stock photos, and mostly that’s been images of delectable looking (hopefully!) and healthy food. these are the two i’m happiest with right now (edamame and ranier cherries.)
technically speaking they were both shot in my bedroom, using a home-made light tent that i built from pvc pipe and tracing paper — I know, high tech! but the final product speaks for itself.

i’m slowly learning my way around the pitfalls of studio-type shots, but it’s a really enjoyable process, and the challenge is probably what draws me towards it… i’m nothing without a challenge in front of me.
but then you already knew that.
