angel island, ca

so yes, i spent a gorgeous afternoon on angel island last saturday, mostly to see what kind of imagery i might pull from that rather dry piece of rock jutting out of the north bay {gawd, did that sound pretentious or what?}

anyway, i did get a behind-the-scenes tour of the old POW barracks, and really enjoyed photographing some of the artifacts from that time period during the 40s when angel island was nothing more than a lightly disguised prison.

there is an aching tension in those walls, even now, and i wished i were fluent in japanese — there are poems etched deep into the wood here… painted over again and again, but still thoroughly legible. i find that quite endearing. the souls are long since gone, but their words remain.

the photo below is my favorite from the shoot, though i hope to post more here as the day progresses.

hope you are all well,
c
